About brazilian music (12/15/2024)
The vast majority of you who come accross this site are prob not brazilian, so i thought a post like that would be a cool way of introducing elements of my culture to new people.
I'm brazilian, and i would say i'm really proud and fond of that. But i wasn't always like that; there was a time in my life i really hated my country and what i thought was it's culture. But now that i've delved more into it, i found a really warm appreciation for the stuff we make, especially the music.
I've learned that there is A LOT of good stuff made here, it's just that it's not publicized as much nowadays anymore. From samba to rock, we've got a bunch of amazing artists. "Roque nacional", as we call brazilian rock, to me has such a distinct sound and feeling to me - probably a mix between my own nostalgia (since i've grown up listening to a lot of it, directly or indirectly) and the use of the portuguese language, which, in the written well, can fit really nicely into some subgenres of rock. I really love it.
It just fascinates me so much how influential our music is in works i deeply love; Evangelion, for example, has got a splendid bossa ending every one of its 26 episodes, Nintendo has drawn inspiration from samba and bossa nova, heck, Takanaka even recorded a full album called Brasilian Skies (yeah "brasilian" with an s) inspired by samba (go listen to it!!)! Frank Sinatra, who i also appreciate deeply, recorded Garota de Ipanema, but i think everyone knows about that lol. It specially amazes me how much of brazilian influence we can hear in japanese music, like in the songs from the lesser known band Lamp and the aforementioned works.
So to name a few artists here there's Raul Seixas, who mixed rock and traditional brazilian music like baião - my favourite from him is "maluco beleza"; "gita" and "eu nasci há 10 mil anos atrás" are really good too -, Engenheiros do Hawaii (which i love!), a band once headed by it's vocalist and bassist Humberto Guessinger - go listen to some of their songs; "numeros", "infinita highway", "toda forma de poder", "o papa é pop", "anoiteceu em porto alegre", "era um garoto que como eu amava os beatles e os rolling stones" (yes that's the song's name! it's a cover of a song of the same title by the band Os Incriveis, which in turn is a portuguese version of the song "C'era un ragazzo che come me amava i Beatles e i Rolling Stones" by italian singer Gianni Morandi) and the list goes on and on -, Paralamas do Sucesso, Capital Inicial - they had their "dark times" but thankfully they got better over time, their version of "Primeiros Erros (chove)" by Kiko Zambianchi is really really good (plus it was parodied by Flamengo - a big football club from Rio de Janeiro- fans so yeaaah you'll hear a version of it just about everywhere around Brazil) -, Legião Urbana - i really like "pais e filhos" -, among others, like Roberto Carlos, Cazuza, Lobão, Rita Lee, etc. Rock is the genre i listen to the most so i don't have that much to talk about other genres but i'd like to mention Jorge Ben Jor - specially "Chove Chuva" and "Taj Mahal" - and samba as a genre. Also can't leave without talking about bossa nova lol, Tom Jobim, Chico Buarque, Toquinho etc are really good; i'm more than sure you've listened to some version of "garota de ipanema" and maybe "aquarela do brasil" too.
Well, that's it, thanks you've read through all that, cheers from Brazil!!!
